NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville offered a somber tribute Wednesday to police officers who have given their life in the line of duty.

State and local leaders were on hand for the annual ceremony, which honored the 43 officers who have died in service since 1875.

Their names were read aloud while family members placed yellow roses at each officer's portrait.

Officials said remembering their sacrifice is important for the community, police department and survivors.

"Just being together, with everybody else that's here - other survivors - you can actually put faces to names and know that there are other people that have gone through the same thing," said Melanie West, daughter of Officer Paul Scurry.

Officer Christy Dedman was the most recent Metro police officer killed in the line of duty.

She lost her life in July 2004. Dedman was assisting a stranded driver on Interstate 40 when she was struck by a tractor-trailer.
