KSLA News 12 Editorial: May 6, 2013-Toxic Waste

I want to show you a picture I took a few days ago.

If you look closely, you can see a bunch of cigarette butts laying on the ground under a tree. It's the type of litter many people take for granted, it's only a cigarette butt.

But with a little research, I found those cigarette butts and millions just like them take up to 12 years to break down and disappear. I also found that in most communities, cigarette butts are the most common form of litter.

How many times have you been stopped at an intersection and see someone throw one out the window? Or worse yet, open their car door and empty their ash tray on the ground?

Cigarette butts are a form of toxic waste. They impact wildlife, rivers and streams and our overall quality of life.

Pause and think before you throw one on the ground.

I'm James Smith.

I hope we are all teaching our kids to be respectful of others, to hold doors open, to say please, thank you, yes ma'am and yes sir. We don't need to expect anything in return, just be proud that you were brought up right.I hope we are all teaching our kids to be respectful of others, to hold doors open, to say please, thank you, yes ma'am and yes sir. We don't need to expect anything in return, just be proud that you were brought up right.

There may be no clear right way or a wrong way to handle a school shooting. At least in Maryland, where an armed school resource officer did his job, is an example of a better way, says Joe Sciortino, vice president and general manager of KSLA News 12.There may be no clear right way or a wrong way to handle a school shooting. Once again, we have a school shooting. This time, in Maryland, an armed school resource officer did his job. He jumped into action and engaged the shooter, who died at the scene. ... I would hope the number of armed school officers is growing.
