Two home runs from Hunter Dozier and a solid start from Stephen F. Austin pitcher Justin Choate gave the Lumberjacks a 6-3 win to take the series from the Northwestern State baseball team Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference action.
Choate (3-2) worked seven innings and allowed only two runs on three hits and struck out seven Demons (14-35, 3-18 SLC). Dozier had solo shot to left field in the first inning and a three-run dinger to center field in the fifth to take four of the Lumberjacks (25-23, 12-9 SLC) six runs batted in.
Dozier's in the five-run fifth inning scored Jackson Hood, who reached on a singled down the left field line to score one, and Brett Thornell after his RBI-single to push the lead to 3-0.
Ashton Sivigliano (2-2) stated the game for the Demons and took the loss on two innings pitched with one run on two hits and one strikeout.
A.J. Funk entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up three runs and was taken out for Matt Farmer who gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
All of the Demons runs came in the eighth inning that opened with two straight walks to Jake Clouatre and Matt Burns. Edwin Gomez singled through the left side to score Clouatre, and Watson singled through the right side to score Burns.
The final run came when Nick Purdy reached on fielder's choice on an attempted double play to score Gomez.
Thornell was one-of-four with a RBI and Hood was one-for-three with a RBI.
Watson was two-of-four with a RBI. Gomez, Toby Cornejo, and Todd Wallace each added a hit.
The Demons do not play a midweek matchup before they travel to Nicholls State for a three-game set that will start on Friday at 6:30. Northwestern State will return home for the last regular season series with Oral Roberts on May 16.
