NSU falls to SFA 6-4

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Four straight base hits to score four runs in the fifth inning rallied Stephen F. Austin to a 6-4 lead to as they defeated the Northwestern State baseball team Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.

Jackson Hood led off the Lumberjack (24-13, 11-9 SLC) fifth with a double to left field. He scored two batters later when Reneph Moredo doubled to left field.

Hunter Dozier singled through the left side to score Moredo and scored one batter later when Freddy Villalobos doubled to right center field.

The Demons dropped to 14-34 on the season and 3-17 in Southland Conference play.

SFA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mackenzie Handel doubled to left center field to score Zach Benson, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. After the second inning, the 'Jacks held a 2-0 lead when Hood singled through the left side to score Joseph Olson.

Northwestern State answered with three runs in the fourth inning that started with a walk to Todd Wallace and a double down the left field line one batter later from Cort Brinson. Nathan Lyon hit a ground ball to shortstop that was was dropped by SFA first baseman Maz Lamantia. Cort Brinson rounded third and headed for home when Lamantia threw the ball away to allow Wallace and Brinson to score.

Lyons scored on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Killgore.

The Demons pushed the score to 4-2 in the top of the fifth frame on a sacrifice fly from Nick Purdy to score Will Watson, who reached on a dropped fly ball by left fielder Ricardo Sanchez.

Northwestern State starter Cody Butler (2-4) took the loss on 4.1 innings pitched and six runs on nine hits and a strikeout. The win went to Kyle Cross (5-5) who pitched seven innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks.

Handel was two-of-four for the 'Jacks with two RBI and one run scored. Olson had two hits in three at-bats and Hood contributed two in four at-bats.

Edwin Gomez was three-for-five and Brinson was two-of-four with a run scored.

The rubber match is set to be played at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
