Vigil held for bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crash
The memorial was set up in the spot where Smith was struck just three days earlier.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Loved ones of a Shreveport man killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash gathered in his memory Thursday.
71-year-old Samuel "Sammie" Leon Smith was struck while riding a bike along the 2400 block of Southern Avenue around 7 p.m. on April 26. Smith died of his injuries shortly after arriving at LSU Medical Center. Police say that he had no identification on him.
The man accused of hitting Smith turned himself in to police earlier this week. Edward Thomas now faces several charges, including a felony hit-and-run.
A make-shift memorial was created for Smith. From far away, it looks like a regular bike. But up close, as drivers can see, the bike is actually a memorial. It's in the spot where, just three days earlier, police cars crowded the street, investigating a hit and run.
