An arrest has been made in the shooting of a Wake Village teen early Thursday morning.

Events began with a frantic 911 call around 4 a.m. at a home in the 900 block of Guam. Police Chief Ronnie Sharp says a group of people were inside the home when one person was handling a .22 caliber rifle and it went off.

"911. Yes. I need an ambulance at 900 Guam. A shotgun went off and hit my 17-year-old daughter," screams a frantic mother who had just witnessed her daughter being shot.

The teenager was taken to a Texarkana hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the chest. She has since undergone surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Her name has not been released.

Wake Village Police Chief Ronny Sharp says there were several people inside the house at the time of the shooting. He says 24-year-old Travis Strange apparently was handling a rifle when the weapon discharged, striking the teen.

Strange has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

"Even though the shooting does appear to be accidental, circumstances surrounding the shooting led us to charge Mr. Strange with aggravated assault causing bodily injuries," Sharp says.

Strange is now at the Bi-State Justice Center Jail under a $40,000 bond.
