KSLA News 12 Editorial: May 1, 2013-Caddo School Tax Election

Posted: Updated:

This Saturday voters in Caddo Parish are asked to decide on a school property tax renewal.

The greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce has made some excellent points voters should consider. Caddo Parish taxpayers already pay the second highest property taxes in the state. But a third of our schools are failing. The financial picture of the Caddo School System is bad and getting worse. A $40 million reserve is gone.

To complicate matters, the current school superintendent is on his way out…and a new superintendent is yet to be hired. Considering the state of Caddo Parish Schools, both academically and financially it would make sense for a comprehensive plan to be developed before voters approve more taxes. It's clear, at least in Caddo, that the high taxes we pay are not resulting in better schools.

There is a disconnect the school board and new superintendent must fix.

I'm James Smith.
