MANCHESTER, TN (WSMV) -

A Middle Tennessee elected official has come under fire for something he posted on Facebook, and now Islamic groups and some citizens he represents are calling for his resignation.

The post includes a photo of a man squinting down the barrel of a gun and a comment above it reads, "How to wink at a Muslim."

Coffee County Commissioner Barry West, who was elected in 2010, posted the image on his Facebook page Saturday.

Leaders at the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro said in a statement:

"This does not only incite hatred but also violence against law-abiding citizens of our great country. Mr. West obviously lacks in wisdom and judgment and, therefore, cannot be trusted as commissioner. I wonder what would Mr. West's response would be if the same photo was posted by someone with a caption that says: 'How to Wink at Mr. West, a Coffee County Commissioner?'"

The group is now calling on Coffee County Mayor David Pennington to fire West for inciting "indiscriminate hatred and violence."

The mayor said that is unlikely.

"I seen the post," Pennington said. "My answer to that is, you know, what a commissioner does on his off time - as long as he's not in a full commission meeting - you know, I have no control over what a commissioner does."

As for West, he said he did not want to talk about the Facebook post or why he decided to post it.

West changed the comment above the gun image Tuesday morning to say:

"Isn't a shame how some think all apples in a barrel are bad if they find one? oh by the way, this is not me in this picture."

He has since removed both the comment and the gun image from his Facebook page.
