CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -
A Shreveport woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for her part in the death and dismemberment of an 87-year-old man in 2007.
45-year-old Beverly Arthur entered a guilty plea Monday in Caddo District Court to second degree murder for the slaying of Charles Martin.
Prosecutors say Arthur and her boyfriend, 41-year-old Eric Mickelson, killed Martin in order to keep him from reporting them to police for stealing, and to steal more money for their drug habits.
Mickelson was convicted of first degree murder in August 2011 for his role in the killing. He is currently sitting on death row at Angola.
Arthur was scheduled to go to trial in July on a charge of first degree murder. Her plea to the lesser charge on Monday eliminated the possibility of the death penalty.
Instead, following her plea and agreement to waive the delay in sentencing, District court Judge Ramona Emmanuel sentenced Arthur to life in prison without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.
In a statement released by the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office, DA Charles Scott said, "This does not compensate for the tragic loss of a loved one, but we sincerely hope this helps bring closure for the Martin family."
Arthur was immediately placed into the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections following her sentencing.
