KSLA News 12 Editorial: April 29th-Your Tax Dollars at Work

Let's say I own a business and I want to raise your taxes so I can fix up my business, make a nicer building and improve my parking. How would you like that?

That's exactly what the Shreveport Mayor and City Council just did. They approved a plan to raise the sales tax at Mall Saint Vincent by 1%. Most of that increase will go to the mall's developer to spruce up the mall. They will get your extra sales tax money for the next 20 years. That's a pretty good deal for the owner of the mall.

What about other shopping centers in Shreveport? I bet they would like a deal like that. You can't beat having the taxpayers pay for your improvements.

The extra sales tax at Mall Saint Vincent starts on July 1st. Two things to watch for….how those improvements shape up and if Shreveport mall shoppers go elsewhere to keep from spending the extra tax.

I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.

Be on the lookout for kids. They seem to dart out from everywhere. They are certainly not looking out for you; so please look out for them.
