Lake Martin neighborhood rebuilds two years after deadly tornado

Posted: Updated:

Some parts of the Windemere neighborhood on Lake Martin have been rebuilt, some of it is still vacant but all of it is cleaned up two years after the tornado changed the landscape and Ken Rush's life.

"When I dove into the closet I said 'please Lord help us survive this,' Rush recalled praying.

Rush and his wife and their 6-year old son survived without a scratch. Their home did not. 60% of it was blown away along with around 75 trees. In fact, it took clean up crews 5 weeks just to clear the family's driveway.

"This part of Lake Martin still bears the mark of that night two years ago, countless homes either heavily damaged or destroyed but there is another part of this story. Two years later they're grateful, moving on and lessons learned.

"We added a storm shelter to the house. It's only time and money but those who lost their lives.. that's unimaginable," Rush said.

The unimaginable part is the fact Elmore County lost 6 of its residents in the storm two years ago today, something the Rush family will never forget on this somber anniversary.

That same storm system killed more than 300 people in 7 states, more than 250 in Alabama alone.
