LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – When the Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon starts Saturday morning among the runners will be a 90-year-old grandmother.
Margaret Hagerty holds the Guinness World Record for "the oldest person to have completed a marathon on each of the seven continents."
Hagerty is making strides to finish up the race in Louisville on Saturday.
"I'm a competitor," said Hagerty, "I love to compete."
Hagerty was a smoker. Her doctor advised her to stop smoking and start exercising. She listened and started running at age 64. She now runs all around the world. Places she has trekked include the Great Wall of China, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Antarctica.
"I like to go to the races and I like to run with the people," said Hagerty. "I like the atmosphere of the races, I like the sport itself."
Hagerty usually runs full marathons, but after pulling a muscle in her knee she has made a concession to just run the mini this time around.
"I'm very competitive," said Hagerty, "I just like to see what I can do, do the best I can."
