Kindergarten teacher saves choking student

At just 6 years old, Hunter Scholfield had never heard of the Heimlich maneuver and didn't know he was making the universal sign for choking as he ran up to his kindergarten teacher Wednesday.

His face was turning red, and he struggled to get words out during snacktime at Captain Strong Primary School in Battle Ground.

"I could tell automatically," said Toni Brammer, Hunter's teacher.

"He put his hands up to his throat and was turning red," Brammer said.

Brammer had learned the Heimlich Maneuver a few years ago in an voluntary afterschool class but never thought she would have to use it.

One quick upward thrust Wednesday, and out popped a fruit snack.

"It hit the floor and you could tell – a sigh of relief from him," Brammer said.

"It's kind of an unspoken promise to parents that we'll do whatever it takes to keep their students safe and happy in the classroom," Brammer said.
