Deas steps down at Evangel; Dawson named football HC

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Evangel announced Thursday changes to the football program. Phillip Deas has stepped down as head coach of the program and Byron Dawson has been named as his replacement.

Dawson was the defensive coordinator for the Eagles before taking the head coaching job. Deas will also stay on as the offensive coordinator. Deas was named head coach in July, 2010, after Evangel parted ways with John Bachman, Sr. Deas led the Eagles to the state championship game last season.

Deas told KSLA News 12 Sports he was stepping down as head coach to spend more time with the church.

Evangel also announced the creation of a new position. Former Loyola head coach, Steven Geter, was named director of football operations.
