MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Chris Jones was charged with second degree murder in the death of his wife Heather Palumbo-Jones Wednesday. His former attorney William Jones IV, who is not related to the client, pulled out long before then. William wanted off the case the Friday before Heather disappeared.

"This is every attorney's worst nightmare," said William. "He had discovered a supposed affair that weekend and then that Monday right before her disappearance he got a letter from our office just formally letting him know that we would no longer represent him."

Chris denied any involvement in his wife's disappearance Friday. He told Action News 5 that he was blindsided when she filed for divorce.

"We were a very happy, beautiful family right up until the day before she decided to leave abruptly," he said.

Germantown police requested a copy of Friday's interview from Action News 5.

"There was a power struggle over a cellular device and it involved invading my privacy and in the grips of both of us having our hands on that device at the same time our leverage gave way and we both fell to the ground and that was the end of it," said Chris in response to why Heather had a protection order against him.

Chris' former attorney said he cannot get into details about why he wanted off the case because of attorney-client privilege. But he did confirm that for the past several days he has had armed security guards at this law office for the first time in his 12 years of practicing law.

Heather and Chris separated in early January. The couple has two young children who are now in the custody of their godmother.

Heather Palumbo-Jones was last seen Monday, April 15. Heather, a kindergarten teacher at Frayser Achievement School, did not report to work the next day.
