LSUS ends regular season with win over cross town rival

Posted: Updated:

The LSU Shreveport Pilots picked up their second win against the Centenary Gents on Tuesday night at Pilot Field 7-4 as they wrap up the 2013 regular season schedule with a six-game winning streak that they will ride into this weekend's Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. Tonight's win gives the Pilots their fifth straight win over their cross-town foes in the series.

Caleb Olson (6-2) picked up the win for the Pilots after tossing a solid five innings but could have went further when a blister took him out of the game in the top of the sixth as he left with the bases loaded. Olson surrendered just three hits allowing two runs on two walks and two strikeouts as he took a no-hitter into the fourth inning that was broken up by a two-out single.

Cade Bowen earned his second save of the year working a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Pilots (36-15) got a pair of runs in the first with the highlight of Brandon Cooksey's rbi-single that scored Reed Lavallee for the second run of the inning after Ridge Gonsoulin had scored the first run on a wild pitch. Lavallee had the hot stick tonight for the Pilots going 4-for-5 at the plate including his first career collegiate homer as he crushed a 2-0 fastball over the right center field wall.

One of Kade Billeaudeaux's (2-for-5 with 2 rbis) two hits of the night came at a great time for the Pilots as he drove in a pair of runs with a triple to left center field as he dissected the Centenary outfield to extend the LSUS' lead to 5-0 at that point of the fifth inning. Manny Estrada followed with his only hit of the night as well with an rbi-single and two batters later Kym Barthel singled in a run as he finished the night 2-for-4.

Brandon Cooksey was the only other Pilots with a pair of hits as he went 2-for-4 with an rbi.

Centenary (24-13) struggled early to solve the Olson puzzle but found their swing with nine of their 10 hits in the final four innings but the Pilots were able to hold off any detrimental rallies.

The bullpen's near collapse surrendered two runs in the sixth that were charged to Olson and then two more allowed by Jonathan Burnett in the seventh inning until Jason Mouton was rescued by Ben Suit who got all three outs in the eighth inning after a leadoff double by the Gent's left fielder Christian Sebastian.

The Pilots will begin the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament this Saturday on a high note having won six games in a row and eight of their last nine against stiff competition. The 4th seeded Pilots open the tournament against the 3rd seeded Texas Wesleyan Rams at 6:30 p. m.
