SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Shreveport man has died after an early morning house fire in the North Highlands neighborhood. It was the third fatal fire this year in Shreveport.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 3900 block of Eddy Place just after 1 a.m.

When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a carport window and a neighbor attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, one man even attempted to enter the house three separate times.

Neighbors told firefighters there was a man trapped inside in the living room.

Jeremiah Dudley, 65, was pulled from the home by firefighters and rushed to LSU hospital with 3rd degree burns, where he later died. There was only one fatal fire in 2012.

Fire investigators have confirmed that the fire originated on the stove top, but the exact cause remains under investigation. However, Dudley's son, Jamerial Dudley tells KSLA News 12 that his dad had fallen asleep and left food cooking on the stove. On the phone Jamerial said he was in disbelief, and that it was hard to take in.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 1:28 a.m.
