Shreveport Fire officials: There is a plan in place

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport Fire Officials say there is a plan in place in case a mass casualty event happens locally.

Assistant Chief Fred Sanders says the Fire Department includes both a hazmat and certified bomb squad.

The hazmat crew includes 56 members, and the bomb squad is made up of 6 technicians.

These departments train year round to handle mass casualty events, like the explosion in West, Texas, and crews understand the danger.

"This is a hazardous occupation but we try to keep it as safe as possible. They also know that we risk nothing to save nothing, we risk a little to save a little, you risk a lot to save a lot, and you risk your own life to save someone else's life. That is the way we practice and we teach," says Sanders.
