MARION CO, TX (KSLA) -

A Marion County dive team has recovered the body of an East Texas man who drowned in Johnson Creek Wednesday afternoon.

Marion County Sheriff David McKnight tells KSLA News 12 that the 22-year-old man from Lone Star was attempting to swim from a fishing pier across the inlet to the Johnson Creek bridge over FM 729 with his brother when he became exhausted.

His 19-year-old brother reportedly tried to help, but became exhausted himself, and had to continue on to safety.

Their sister called for help around 5:45 p.m. Sheriff McKnight says the Marion County Dive Team was called in and recovered the body around 7:45 p.m. in about 10 feet of water.

McKnight says high winds and choppy water may have contributed to the swimmer's exhaustion.

His name has not yet been released.
