La Tech downs Demons, 3-1, in midweek match up

Posted: Updated:

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs capitalized on five defensive errors by the Demons to defeat in-state foe Northwestern State, 3-1, Tuesday night at Brown-Stroud Field in Natchitoches, La.

With the midweek victory, the Bulldogs snapped a five-game losing streak and have now won five of the last six games over the Demons of Northwestern State and lead the all-time series 86-60.

"I told the guys that it does not matter if it was pretty or ugly, and it was pretty ugly tonight, but we won," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "This might be something that can give us a spark. Our guys continue to play hard. I thought we pitched extremely well on the road after two tough road trips. Our guys needed to see some success tonight, and we had it."

Freshman Adam Derouen (1-0) picked up the win for Tech after getting the start on the night and allowing just two hits in two innings of work. The Bulldogs used nine different pitchers in the win with Caleb Dudley (5) closing out the night for his fifth save of the season and the 28th in his career at Tech.

Starter Joey Parrack was charged with the loss for Northwestern State after allowing two runs – both unearned – off three hits in seven innings of work. Parrack struck out six batters before being relieved in the eighth for Logan Shaftner, who allowed one unearned run off one hit.

Tech took a 2-0 lead early when Kody Neel reached third on a three-base error by catcher Nick Purdy on a bunt in front of the plate to start the inning off for the Bulldogs. Corey White then reached first on an error by Demon third baseman Edwin Gomez to bring up Kimbell, who followed up with a single to left field to plate Neel. White later scored a balk call on pitcher Joey Parrack to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage after two innings of play.

Northwestern State cut Tech's lead to one in the bottom of the seventh inning after designated hitter Regan Kaufman earned a bases-loaded walk by reliever Gilley.

The Bulldogs added their third and final run of the day in the top half of the eighth after Taylor Love reached base on a fielding error with one out in the inning. Love immediately stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Love then scored on a throwing error on catcher Purdy to extend Tech's lead to 3-1 over the Demons.

Bre'shon Kimbell led the Bulldogs at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with an RBI. Kimbell had two of Tech's four hits on the night as Taylor Terrasas and Ryan Jones each added a hit.

Demon right fielder Cort Brinson was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four singles for Northwestern State.

Louisiana Tech will return home to host New Mexico State in Western Athletic Conference play beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in Ruston.
