KSLA examines security at Holiday in Dixie

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of revelers enjoy the Holiday in Dixie festivities every year, and the fun times are going on now at Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport.

But in light of Monday's bombings in Boston, KSLA is asking about security concerns. Fred Childers reports that, if there are concerns, no one is letting them show. This includes both law enforcement and the crowd.

Security for Holiday in Dixie is provided by Shreveport Police officers and the department's Special Services Unit.

The 10-day carnival is one of the oldest running festivals in Louisiana. Police have a lot of history to review when they want to make improvements. Police tell us that they haven't made changes based on what happened in Boston.

"We're going to be doing what we always do, and that's provide a safe environment for guests and patrons in events like that. And we staff those events based on need," SPD spokesman Bill Goodin says.

And they base that need on what they've seen in the past. Thousands of Holiday in Dixie visitors come through downtown Shreveport for a couple of weeks, and police say the event is adequately covered.
