Report: Saints may be facing a hefty fine

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) -

After a bounty scandal derailed the New Orleans Saints 2012 season, it looks as though the team may be facing its next crisis.

The Washington Post reports the team could face a hefty fine for violating laws governing the proper storage, control and dispensing of prescription drugs.

In 2009 the team's director of security, Geoffrey Santini, resigned and soon after filed a lawsuit against the New Orleans Saints alleging that at least one member of the coaching staff was abusing the team's Vicodin supply.

The case eventually went to arbitration where Santini and the Saints settled claims.

The Post article says the video evidence showed assistant coach Joe Vitt removing Vicodin from the team's facility on more than one occasion.

The DEA has completed its investigation and Prosecutors in Louisiana are assessing the case.

The Post article reports the case is still open and, according to people with knowledge of the situation, federal authorities are weighing a hefty fine against the Saints for violating laws governing the proper storage, control and dispensing of prescription drugs.

The New Orleans Saints declined comment on the Washington Post.
