A balanced, complete team effort led the Northwestern State baseball team to the most runs the Demons have scored this season in a 12-1 run-rule win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night in Southland Conference action.
The Demons (11-23, 2-8 SLC) got a great start on the mound from Cody Butler (2-2) who pitched seven innings and allowed only one run. The Demon offense had timely hitting and took advantage of runners in scoring position from five stolen bases and seven wild pitches from the Islanders (19-14, 6-4 SLC).
NSU scored in five of eight innings, and every scoring inning had at least two runs. The Demons had a base runner in every innings.
"It was the best total team effort we have had all season and was fun to watch the guys enjoy their success," said head coach Lane Burroughs. "Cody Butler filled up the strike zone and was effective with all three pitches.
"We had numerous two-out RBIs and scored runners that were in scoring position," he said. "We ran the bases great and (Edwin) Gomez and (Matt) Burns made outstanding defensive plays on the left side of the infield."
The Demons opened the contest with two runs in the first inning. Edwin Gomez scored on a fielder's choice from Will Watson, and Watson scored from third base on a wild pitch.
In the three-run third, Todd Wallace scored on a single to center field, from Gomez, after he walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Regan Kaufman.
Gomez stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before he scored on a single to right field by Toby Cornejo. Cornjeo scored on a throwing error by the pitcher Trevor Foss.
The Demons added two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single from Watson to right field that scored Cornejo and Gomez. Gomez reached on a single up the middle and Cornejo hit a one-bagger to right center field.
Two more runs were scored on an RBI-double from Todd Wallace and a deep groundout from Zack Costa. Wallace's double to left center scored Nick Purdy from second base and Wallace scored from third base after Costa grounded out to the second baseman.
The Islanders scored their only run in the seventh inning on a single through the left side from Cody Stephens that sent Brandon Tierney to the plate.
NSU put up the final threeruns in the eighth inning when Cornejo and Watson each reached on walks and scored on a single up the middle from Purdy after a wild pitch put them on second and third bases. Purdy scored on a double to left center field by Wallace.
Trevor Foss (5-4) pitched four innings and gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts. AJ Longoria gave up two runs on an inning pitched and a walk and hit. The Islanders went through five pitchers.
Nick Helmstetter worked the eighth inning for the Demons and allowed a hit and walk.
Will Watson led the charge at the plate with a two-for-four game with three RBI and two run scored. Toby Cornejo was three-of-four with three runs scored and a RBI.
Gomez scored three runs on two hits in four at-bats, and Todd Wallace was two-of-three with two runs scored and two RBI; his two doubles were the only extra bases hits on the night.
Tierney and Brad Porras each had two hits in four tries for Corpus Christi. Tierney had a runs scored.
The two teams will matchup again tomorrow at 5 and on Sunday at 1 o'clock.
