School take-over possible in 2014

CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Some Caddo School Board officials hosted a community meeting at Booker T. Washington High School Tuesday to discuss rumors of a possible state take-over of some failing schools.

School Board Member Carl Pierson says despite rumors, Booker T. Washington High School, Fair Park College Prep, Green Oaks Performing Arts Magnet, and Woodlawn Leadership Academy, some of the state's failing schools, will not be taken over until at least 2014.

"I hope and pray that the schools do well enough that the state will not come and take them over," says Pierson.

Pierson, along with some Caddo Parish Parents hope the schools will use the next year to raise test scores.

"We cannot allow the state to come in and do something that we should have done ourselves, we need to save ourselves, period," says Parent Erik Mack.

But some say it is time for the state to step-in and place the schools under the care of a Charter Company.

"We should have been rallying when schools were labeled as failing," says Booker T. Washington High School Alumnae Frederic Washington.

Washington says it is too late now, and parents should be cooperative if the state decides to step in.

The State is already making preparations for a possible takeover of those four Caddo Parish High Schools. If the State decides to step in, the schools could be handed over to a Charter Company.
