Thousands wait hours to apply for Margaritaville jobs

Margaritaville looks to fill a staff of 1,200. Margaritaville looks to fill a staff of 1,200.

More than 3,000 people waited for hours in line on Thursday at the Bossier Civic Center, all looking for a job at the new Margaritaville Casino and Resort.

"Oh gosh the line was terrible. I was freezing I think my toes were numb," said job seeker Shenita Aoford who ultimately decided to stick it out. She ended up waiting in line for two hours to get into what the Margaritaville is calling their "Work in Paradise Job Fair".

"I mean this is something new, so it will be a good experience," said Aoford, adding she hopes to trade her fast-paced life of traveling as an auditor for a chance to work at the beach themed casino. She's not alone, thousands showed up at the job fair, hoping to snag one of the 1,200 positions available.

Margaritaville marketing manager Charity Myers says the large crowds beat their expectations. "But we're thrilled we've had so many people show up and show so much interest in Margaritaville."

With so many competing for jobs, there is an intense screening process. Hotel manager Jordin Hennigan says only people with a certain "spark" of personality are making it through the first round. "We're looking for people with big smiles, always a positive attitude, you know that laid back Jimmy Buffet feel," said Hennigan.

Those with that special spark, moved onto the next round where their qualifications and experience were inspected by hiring managers. After the job fair is over, the finalists will go through a more intense interview process. Casino leaders hope to have most of their staff hired by May. The casino resort is expected to open in June.
