KSLA News 12 Editorial: April 3rd-Public Interest Stations

Today, I want to talk about television, local television. Many of us have over 200 channels we can choose from but only a few channels are local.

These are the broadcast channels like KSLA News 12 that operate in the public interest right here in the ArkLaTex.
To that end, we are airing the following message from the National Association of Broadcasters.

The local broadcast stations invest millions of dollars in people and equipment in order to serve the ArkLaTex in a way no cable or satellite channel can: tracking storms, covering the news from your neighborhood, being there when troops return from the war, telling you about valuable businesses and services in our community.

There is some concern politicians and regulators in Washington tend to group local broadcasters in with all the other cooking and lifestyle channels. I just want to make the case, there is a difference.

I'm James Smith.
