LSUS edges Muleriders in midweek game

Posted: Updated:

After falling behind 5-0 to visiting LSU-Shreveport on Tuesday afternoon inside Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field, the Southern Arkansas baseball team rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh; but a two-run top of the eighth inning pushed the Pilots past the Muleriders by a final score of 8-7.

The sizable 5-0 lead for the Pilots (25-13) was established as part of a five-run top of the third inning in which the Pilots also notched four hits in the frame. Prior to that burst of offense, Mulerider (25-12) starter Timothy Buchanan was sharp as worked around a couple of hits and racked up four strikeouts over the first two innings. Out of the five runs to score in the third, only one run was charged to Buchanan as an earned run.

The Muleriders would be held off the scoreboard by Pilots' starter Caleb Olsen until the bottom of the fifth inning when William Townsend placed a single into right field scoring Ryan Bell all the way from first base. The Pilots then got that run back in the top of the sixth inning when Kym Barthel came home on a throwing error by the Muleriders' catcher after Barthel had advanced to third base on a wild pitch.

Trailing by five runs once more, the Muleriders would score three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 7-6 lead. Both the tying run and the go-ahead run would score on sacrifice flies in the seventh inning as Brady Capshaw drove in the tying run while Tyler Cameron put the Muleriders out in front.

In the next half-inning, however, the Pilots would recapture the lead as they scored a pair of runs on two hits off of reliever Justin Thomas. Thomas had entered the game in the top of the seventh inning and got a fielder's choice with the based loaded to end the inning.

Jonathan Burnett then came on for the Pilots in the eighth inning and Burnett would allow just one base runner over the final two innings as he collected his first save of the season.

The Muleriders will now turn their attention to the weekend as they will play host to East Central in a three-game series starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5th.
