CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - The Caddo Parish School Board voted 6-2 Tuesday night to hire a Nebraska firm in its search for a new superintendent.
The board made the decision not to renew the contract of Dr. Gerald Dawkins back in January, and his contract will expire on Aug. 12.
Before Tuesday's vote, the board was at odds about the best way to search for Dawkins' replacement. The issue was whether it should hire an outside agency to search nationally for superintendent candidates or handle the hiring process locally and without the expense of an agency.
Back in 2008, the school board spent more than $60,000 to find and hire the current superintendent Dr. Gerald Dawkins, and $25,000 was paid to an outside agency.
In an interview earlier this year with KSLA, board members acknowledged that there is not money in the budget to use an outside agency, and arrangements will need to be made if they choose to go with one.
The board's 6-2 vote now brings in McPherson and Jacobson, which is based in Omaha, Nebraska. Three board members were absent and did not vote.
The next move is for the board to give McPherson and Jacobson a list of criteria to use in its search for Dawkins' successor.
The board anticipates having a new leader by Aug. 11, which is one day before the end of Dawkins' contract.
Despite his contract not being renewed, Dawkins chose to complete his term.
