MARSHALL, TX (KLTV) -

A movement called "Change for Hunter" is sweeping across Marshall, TX. The community is donating money to help with a life changing surgery for 8 year old Hunter Tomlin.

Hunter has Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that attacks the body's nerves and tissues.

"He was such a perfect baby," says Hunter's maternal grandmother Gayla Thomas.

It wasn't until Hunter was a month old that doctors diagnosed him with the disorder. The disorder makes it difficult for Hunter to talk and see. His body will also be plagued with tumors for the rest of his life.

Doctors are preparing for a surgery to remove a tumor around his eyes, and with a successful surgery it will save his vision.

"We have been waiting, and at this point we cannot wait anymore," says Ginny Harris, Hunter's Paternal Grandmother.

In anticipation of Hunter's surgery, community members have started a string of local fundraisers.

Hunter's school, David Crockett Elementary School, raised more than $3,000 for Hunter's medical expenses.

Donation jars bearing the slogan "Change for Hunter" are also popping up throughout the Marshall community at local businesses, a surprise to the family.

"I knew we had friends, but I had no clue, it's great," says Harris.

Hunter will undergo surgery on Tuesday April 2nd at Children's Hospital in Dallas. He will spend a week in the hospital, before coming back to Marshall. He is expected to be out of school for the rest of the year.
