A McNeese grand slam crushes NSU in Southland action

A grand slam in the second inning from Tyler Klouser opened the door for seven straight unanswered runs for McNeese State in an 11-5 win over the Northwestern State baseball team Thursday night in Southland Conference action.

The Demons (9-19, 0-4 SLC) opened the game with a run in the first and second innings before Klouser hit the bases-loaded long ball in the second.  The Cowboys (15-9, 3-1) added two runs in the third and another in the sixth to make the score 7-2.

NSU responded with a run in the seventh inning, but McNeese added four more in the seventh and eighth innings combined before Northwestern State finished out the game with two in the ninth inning.

Will Watson scored the first run of the game by stealing home in the opening frame.  He reached on a two out error by second baseman Phillip Lebleu, and reached third on a single to right center by Todd Wallace.

Cort Brinson led off the second inning with his second career home run to left center field to push it to a 2-0 score.

Down 7-2, Nick Purdy gave the Northwestern State its third run when he scored from third base on a groundout to the right side by Toby Cornejo.

The final two runs scored on a two-out home run to left field by Mitch Huckabay that scored Regan Kaufman.  Kaufman reached on a walk earlier in the innings.

Cody Butler (1-2) took the loss after he got his first weekend conference start of the season. He worked five innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Logan Shaftner worked three innings in relief, and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits.

Bryce Kingsley (5-2) locked up the win on seven innings pitched with three runs allowed.  Trey McGee pitched one inning and gave up one hit, and Tyler Parke pitched an inning and gave up the two-run shot from Huckabay.

Matt Burns and Todd Wallace each had two hits on the night.  Burns' two-for-five night pushed his hitting streak to six games. Kaufman and Garrett Killgore also added a hit to the effort.

Klouser, Michael Sullivan, Matt Williams, and Connor Lloyd each had two hits for the Cowboys. Klouser had four runs batted in, and Lloyd had two.

Northwestern State and McNeese State will return to action on Friday at 6:30 and on Saturday at 1 o'clock. The Demons will return home on April 5 when they take on Central Arkansas at home in Brown-Stroud Field.
