BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Members of the House Democratic Caucus are pledging their non-support Wednesday morning for the governor's tax swap initiative.

Gov. Bobby Jindal is planning to introduce legislation that would eliminate the state's income tax in favor of higher sales taxes. The caucus said the idea is a regressive tax plan that would harm poor and elderly people on fixed incomes.

Members added they will aggressively work to defeat the measures. One representative said the state is ignoring easy money.

"Now the governor wants to give them back millions of dollars," said state Rep. James Armes, D-Leesville. "For example, when the Falcons played the Saints in the Dome last November, the team payroll for just one game was $5.4 million. At 6 percent, Louisiana collected $322,000 in taxes from the Falcons."

The session starts April 8.
