CAMPTI, LA (KSLA) -

Fire crews are keeping an eye on the fire still smoldering at the Red River Mill, after bundles of old corrugated cardboard caught fire there on Sunday afternoon.

It started in an outside storage area at the International Paper mill on Highway 480 in Campti around 4:45 p.m.

Mutual aid from Natchitoches and Red River parishes were called in to assist in fighting the flames.

A spokesperson for IP says the fire will not interfere with the mill's operation. Tracy Washington says the storage area is several hundred yards away from the Recycle Processing area, and production will not be impacted.

Officials are at the scene monitoring high winds to make sure the fire does not spread. They plan to let it burn itself out, and Washington says crews are keeping the remaining bales of paper soaked with water.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the incident is under investigation.
