Gladewater remembers medal of honor recipient

A solemn and emotional ceremony today in Gladewater , to remember a true American hero who won the nations highest honor for bravery. The congressional medal of honor. For sacrificing his life and saving his unit in the Korean war, master sergeant Travis Watkins of Gladewater was awarded the congressional medal of honor. For the sixth year, people have gathered to remember.

"There were many just like him, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. I've always felt a huge honor to have an opportunity to be here to be with the other people in the local community," says Korean war veteran Larry Kinard.

For Watkins family, the ceremony has become a testament to true heroism and the courage of all Americans.

"Their efforts to honor my grandfather and all of the soldiers who've served this country is an honor. We know that we owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who don's a uniform and protects the freedom of this country," says Watkins grandson Jason Branch.

Local veterans were joined by representatives of the Korean armed forces, who echo the sentiment of their American brothers, on the cost of freedom.

"This kind of ceremony always reminds us that freedom , is not free. I am honored to be here and to show respect and appreciation from the Korean people," says republic of Korea lieutenant colonel Kang Moon Ho.

In committee, now in the Texas legislature, is a bill that would rename part of highway 80 in Gladewater , to the 'Travis E. Watkins highway'. 2013 is the 60th anniversary of the Korean war armistice.
