(RNN) - Gun control and assault weapons issues thrust themselves into the spotlight after a college campus narrowly avoided tragedy and lawmakers stalled to make legislative progress.

A former college student plotting an attack on his former peers was found dead after his roommate thwarted his plan.

Officials in Orlando said former University of Central Florida student James Seevakumaran, 30, set off the fire alarm in a university dorm with the intention of shooting evacuees.

Seevakumaran's roommate, Arabo Babakhani, called police when he saw the suspect has an assault rifle, giving UCF Police time to respond.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Democrats announced they will drop their efforts to pass the assault weapons ban that gained momentum after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

On the other side of the aisle, the GOP focused on passing Rep. Paul Ryan's budget, which easily passed though the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. However, Democrats in the Senate successfully blocked Ryan's fiscal plan.

President Barack Obama spent his week away from Capitol Hill despite the legislative drama, choosing to take a diplomatic trip to Israel instead. Obama reiterated his support of Israeli leadership during several speeches in Jerusalem.
