NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
An apparent road rage incident involving a North Carolina deputy caught on tape by a Summerville man has gone viral.
Chad Walton and an Onslow County Sheriff's Office deputy were driving east on Interstate 526 on Monday around 6:35 p.m. when the incident happened, according to North Charleston police.
Video shot by Walton, as he was driving, shows the deputy driving in the left lane of a two-lane section of the road, alongside a SUV. Walton said the deputy was driving 50 miles per hour, while he was doing about 60 miles per hour.
"I politely flashed my high beam lights," said Walton. "When I did that, that's when he initially brake checked me."
When the road opens to three lanes, you see Walton pass both vehicles on the right.
As the road narrows back to two lanes, Walton shifts over to the left, prompting the deputy to pass him on the right. Then, the deputy suddenly drifts over in front of Walton and slams on brakes, causing the vehicles to strike.
"You make me hit your car, I'm not gonna be the happiest person out there, so I was a little bit irritated by it," Walton said.
A 911 operator urged Walton to pull over, but he refused.
"He's armed, I have no idea what he's gonna do," said Walton.
North Charleston police ruled the deputyat fault for the accident but did not issue a citation.
Walton also was not charged.
No damage was done to Walton's Ford pickup, and damage was estimated at roughly $150 for the deputy's cruiser, according to the report. No one was hurt.
Walton said he began shooting the video after he saw the deputy, Craig Culpepper of Jacksonville, NC, yelling at him from the cruiser, shortly after Walton had flashed his high beams.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Culpepper was in South Carolina for K-9 training. Brown also said Culpepper has already tendered his resignation.
"Great, but I would have preferred him to be fired or issued a ticket," said Walton.
