Grace Community School dedicated a new baseball field Tuesday night. The Cougars also honored a grieving family.
The Cougars showed off a renovated baseball field, with new dugouts and a new scoreboard.
Grace high school principal Wanda Shaeffer threw out the first pitch. Little did Shaeffer know the Cougars had dedicated their season to the Shaeffer family. Wanda's husband died of leukemia in February.
The team honored the late Lanny Shaefer, wearing his initials on their team hats. It was a surprise to Wanda.
"It meant a lot thinking I was throwing the first pitch on opening day," said Wanda Shaeffer. "I thought I was doing that as the principal. Then when I got here and realized how much these young men have honored me and my family by dedicating the season to us, words can't express how much that means."
Grace opened the new field in thrilling fashion against All Saints. The Cougars won 2 to 1 in ten innings.
