SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Caddo Parish school bus driver is was critically injured after his bus hit a metal pole outside Caddo Middle Magnet in the Cedar Grove neighborhood Monday morning.

Police say it happened in the 7600 block of Cornelius Lane.

The driver is identified as Robert McAdams. Caddo school officials say McAdams was bringing a load of students to class when his bus, No. 477, collided with a pole just after 7 a.m.

The pole pierced the side of the bus impaling McAdams. He was rushed to LSU Medical Center with critical injuries. He is now listed in serious condition.

Victor Mainiero, Caddo Director of Communications for Caddo Schools, confirmed that McAdams was in surgery Monday morning. 

Mainiero also says several students were injured, though none seriously enough to be taken to the hospital.

Caddo school officials are dealing with McAdams' injuries as well as the trauma of students who were on the bus and in the school.

Crisis counselors are on the scene now.
