Learn about city government, apply for Mayor's Citizen Academy
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
The City of Tyler is hosting a 12 week program for citizens to become more knowledgeable about city government and departments.
The program is called The Mayor's Citizens Academy. In order to participate, each citizen must fill out an online application.
Communications manager of the City of Tyler Kristi Boyett says The Mayor's Citizens Academy is a great way for citizens to get involved in the community.
"We're really looking for any citizen who's interested in what the city does but also those who would like to serve on a board or commission or even run for city council or mayor," says Boyett.
Kelvin Woodfin hopes to be part of the academy and says it will benefit his career and long term goals.
"I'm really interested in the 'Keep Tyler Beautiful' board because I'm involved with a lot of people that move to Tyler and I do home loans in Tyler. I think we have a great city that is beautiful and I would love to be able to keep it that way," says Woodfin.
Boyett says the ideal candidates are those looking to get involved with the city by serving on a board, volunteering in one of the departments, or running for mayor.
"Every night the citizens are fed dinner at a different location, they get to meet different subject matter experts, otherwise called a department leader," says Boyett.
Even though the experiences are centered around learning more about city government, Boyett says they want a wide variety of participants.
"Anyone who is interested in what the city does and how we do it should apply. You don't have to have aspirations to be the mayor," says Boyett.
Applications are due this Friday. The class starts April 11, and will meet each Thursday for 12 weeks.
