A fire started by a lawn mower burned ten acres in Gregg county.
Firefighters say the fire started Saturday afternoon near Airline road and Pliler-precise road, north of Longview. When fire crews arrived, the flames had engulfed around 5 acres already. High winds and dry conditions forced crews from Judson-Metro and Longview to make a stand along Airline road, to protect nearby homes. A little over ten acres were burned. After 2 hours , crews had the blaze under control but not without some tense moments.
"I was fixing to get with the sheriffs office and call for an evacuation of the area just because of the high potential of us having something major. Wild land fire, heavy timber lots of fuel, 35 mile an hour wind," says Judson-Metro fire chief Mike Fennell.
Investigators say the fire was caused by a nearby resident's lawn mower. Fire investigators warn residents not to leave burning trash because of the dry conditions.
