Funeral arrangements have been set for the founder of the Shreveport Community Church and Evangel Christian Academy, who died Saturday.

Rodney Duron passed away at home Saturday morning after a long illness following several debilitating strokes 5 years ago. He was 88. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances, who was at his side when he passed away.

According to the Community Church web site, Duron and his wife, Frances, began pastoring the church in the 50s, when it was located in the Cedar Grove area of Shreveport.

It has since moved west Shreveport and grown to become church home for several thousand in the Shreveport-Bossier area. Son Denny took over the reins of the church in 1998. In 2009, the church expanded its presence in Bossier City, by merging with the Family Worship Center and becoming Northpoint Community Church.

Rodney and Frances also founded Evangel Christian Academy in 1980 as a small kindergarten to eighth grade school. The high school was added in 1989, growing to earn state and national recognition in academics and athletics.

Pastor Denny Duron says the fact that his father died on 3/16 is not lost on his family.

John 3:16, one of the most widely quoted verses from the Bible, has been referred to as the "Gospel in a nutshell:" For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

"That's my dad," says Denny Duron.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at Shreveport Community Church at 4 p.m.
