Free education for Louisiana National Guard members is safe
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
The Louisiana National Guard announced today the State Tuition Exemption Program, "STEP", is safe from budget cuts caused by sequestration. The program will continue to offer free education for the National Guard Members.
"The school's is not paying for it, that soldier is not paying for it, and the state is not paying for it, or the federal government, it's just saying hey it's exempt," says Staff Sgt. CJ Rachal with the Army National Guard.
STEP waives 100% of a soldiers tuition fees at any in-state public university.
This announcement comes just days after the Federal Tuition Assistance program was cut for all active on duty military because of sequestration budget cuts.
Louisiana National Guard members will not receive FTA in the future, but their tuition remains intact through STEP.
"They can't use their FTA to save their GI BILL for their dependence so they kinda have a negative," says Rachal.
So far this year, STEP has helped more than 1,500 National Guard members futher their education.
