SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The search continues for a man who police say stole a car from a Shreveport daycare with a child inside.

It happened just before 11 Thursday morning in the Sunset Acres neighborhood. Mother Meshona Houston tells KSLA News 12 that she left her 7-year-old daughter in the car and ran inside the Dreamkeeper's Academy daycare at Liberty Church in the 6700 block of Melara Avenue to drop another child off.

When she looked out the window, she says she saw a man getting into her car. By the time she got outside, he was behind the wheel and driving off with her daughter inside. Houston says she managed to grab the driver's side door handle in an attempt to stop the man, only to be dragged several feet before having to let go.

Police say he struck a utility pole on the way out of the parking lot, causing minor damage to the vehicle.

Houston says she was able to take note of the direction he was heading. Meanwhile, witnesses at the daycare called police.

The stolen black 4-door Mercedes C230 was found a short time later with the child inside just a few blocks away in the 3000 block of Amherst Street. Neighbors were alerted by the sound of the little girl crying, and found her standing outside the vehicle.

7-year-old Madison is shaken, her mother says, but ok. Houston was treated at the scene for cuts and bruises from being dragged. Both she and her daughter were able to give police a description of the man who took the car.

Houston says the man took off with her purse. A witness in the neighborhood where the car was abandoned reported seeing him running from the car and running between houses. Police believe he may have been bitten by a dog as he fled through several backyards, ultimately making his way back to a vehicle that he had apparently parked near the intersection of Quilen Blvd. near Melara.

Police are still looking in the area for a black male in his 20s, about 6'2" with a slender build, light complexion, wearing a dark khaki pants and a long-sleeve denim shirt and a black and red baseball cap.

Police are also processing the car in hopes of coming up with fingerprints that will help identify a suspect.

If identified and arrested, he will face both carjacking and kidnapping charges.

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact Caddo Crime Stoppers at (318) 673-7373 or on their website at lockemup.org
