BAFB: 2013 Defenders of Liberty Air Show cancelled

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, LA (KSLA) -

Barksdale Air Force Base has confirmed the cancellation of the 2013 Defenders of Liberty Air Show.

According to a release issued by BAFB 2nd Bomb Wing Public Affairs, the air show, scheduled for May 4-5, has been canceled due to the growing impacts of sequestration.

"The men and women of Barksdale would like to thank the local community for your unwavering support, especially during these difficult times."

According to the statement released Wednesday morning, base officials continued to plan for the event in hopes that a budget agreement would be reached, but the impacts of sequestration continue to grow as the Air Force was forced to suspend tuition assistance Monday.

According to David Rockett, Executive Director of the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation, the cancellation of the 2013 air show could result in the loss of some $5 million dollars in economic impact.

Rockett says that figure is based on a study commissioned by the Military Affairs Council in recent years. Most of the losses will be felt in the local service industry, including hotels and restaurants.

Dates for next year's show have not been set.
