East Texas seniors now have a chance to be recognized at a state and national level for their volunteer service work.
Home Instead Senior Care recognizes seniors annually through their program, "Salute to Senior Service."
If you know a senior who makes an impact in the community by volunteering their time and talents, you can nominate them for the annual contest. It began in February and will go to the end of March.
Salute to Senior Service wants to encourage seniors to stay active and healthy.
"Not only are they making a difference in the lives of the people they are volunteering for, but they're also making a difference for themselves in their own lives by being active they're quality of life is increasingly better," says Home Instead Senior Care representative Allison McKinney.
"They meet people, they meet friends, they meet peers because they have things in common," says McKinney.
Iris and Roger Daughtry volunteer for meals on wheels. They say they look forward to delivering the food each week.
"I've made so many friends that I can't hardly wait to see them. I mean you just really get attached to a lot of people," says Iris.
"You're on their level, you can communicate with them because you know what they're talking about when they talk to you about their grand kids and you get to talk to them about yours, you get to brag back and forth," says Roger.
Salute to Senior Service invites anyone to nominate any senior who serves for any non-profit organization.
"If you're retired and just sitting around then you got time to do some of this, and it will make you feel so much better, also," says Roger.
