East Texas students learn about frontier life

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Some East Texas school children got a chance to see what life was like on the old frontier during the first "Pioneer Days" at Longview Christian School.

The students, dressed in period costume, got a chance to see how the pioneers did everyday things, like washing clothes, cooking over an open fire, shoeing horses and frontier medical care.

The lesson was to show how many conveniences and luxuries we have today, as well as how hard life was during the early forming of the country.

"Hopefully they're learning more about the things that are in the environment: planting crops learning about the sassafras that's in the woods, learning how doctors had the facilities, equipment they had to use unlike our modern hospitals, so hopefully they're learning something about the pioneer way of life," said Kahlan Stanley, a history teacher at the school

The students were given even fed a pioneer lunch: chili and cornbread cooked on an open campfire.
