Hundreds of people packed Morning Star Baptist Church in Shreveport Thursday afternoon for a prayer vigil in honor of Caddo Commissioner Joyce Bowman.
Bowman, a Morning Star member, was joined by family, friends, and community members for an hour long service.
"In spite all that I am going through I just know in my heart all is well," says Bowman.
Bowman has been battling lung cancer for the past 9 months. She found out two weeks ago that cancer spread to her brain, and just a week ago KSLA News 12 reported in an exclusive interview that Bowman was no longer a candidate for the Gamma Knife Procedure to treat the cancer.
"She says it all the time, ‘the prayers kept me going', and I need you to do it one more time," says Cynthia Hightower-Jenkins, a close friend of Bowman.
Bowman was featured on this month's cover of "hope" magazine wearing pink boxing gloves. Those gloves, along with a framed version of the magazine cover, were presented to Bowman at the prayer vigil.
"These people were praying for me, why, because I asked them to. But if nothing comes out of this God's name is glorified," says Bowman.
Bowman will begin the next phase of her treatment, radiation therapy, Friday at LSU Medical Center.
