La Tech baseball falls to Baylor in ninth inning rally

Posted: Updated:

Louisiana Tech held a slim one-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth but couldn't survive a rally as Baylor's Duncan Wendel hit a walk-off single to center as the Bears swept the two-game series from the Bulldogs with a 5-4 win Wednesday afternoon in front of 2,222 at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.

Louisiana Tech (3-10) held a slim 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth but Lawton Langford scored for Baylor (7-6) on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Langford initially walked and moved to third on a Cal Towey single on a hard line drive that ricocheted off of Tyler Ervine's glove and rolled into right field. Towey would score during the next at bat when Wendel hit his walk-off single.

"We were an inch away from a line-drive double play in the ninth inning that ricocheted off Ervine's glove," Louisiana Tech head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "That was the difference in the ball game right there. If he makes that catch, there are two outs and nobody on base."

"Our guys are fighting," Simoneaux continued. "They are playing hard. They played good baseball tonight, and I like the direction we're going. I know our record doesn't indicate it, but I really think we're going to get [our team] there."

Caleb Dudley (0-3) was charged with the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth off four hits while walking two and striking out four, matching a career-long outing of 5.1 innings. The wild pitch that tied the game was Dudley's first wild pitch in seven outing this year. Doug Ashby (1-0) was credited with the win after holding the Bulldogs hitless in 2.2 innings, striking out three and walking two.

The loss marked Tech's fifth one-run loss of the season. Two of Tech's four runs were unearned as the Bulldogs jumped on two Baylor errors but they couldn't withstand Baylor's late-game rally.

Baylor took the early lead as Adam Toth hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Towey in the first inning. The Bears would add two more runs in the second off of RBI singles by Towey and Wendel.

Sam Alvis put Tech on the board in the third inning with a solo home run down the left field line, his second home run of his career. The Bulldogs added another run as Taylor Burch, who reached base on a double to right, advanced to third and scored on a throwing error by Baylor starting pitcher Sterling Wynn.

Tech would add a run in the fourth off of an RBI groundout by Kody Neel and another run in the fifth on an RBI double by Taylor Terrasas as he plated Colby Johnson, who reached on a Jake Miller error.

Louisiana Tech returns to action Friday as the Bulldogs host Nebraska (4-7) in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
