Maton leads La Tech to win over McNeese

Sophomore Phil Maton struck out nine batters and did not allow a run as Louisiana Tech (3-6) defeated the Cowboys of McNeese State (4-5), 6-0, in game one of the three-game series Friday night at Cowboy Diamond in Lake Charles.

Maton (2-0) earned the win after pitching seven complete innings and allowing just two hits, while holding the Cowboys scoreless for his second combined shutout of the season. Maton has now struck out 23 opposing batters this season and has yet to allow an extra-base hit in 2013.

"Phil (Maton) is a competitor," head coach Wade Simoneaux said. "You give him the ball and he is going to go deep into a game. He had one inning in the sixth that elevated his pitch count. I was thinking he was going to have a complete game, but Phil is so dynamic on that mound for us, and he gives us a chance to win every time."

Freshman right hander Bryce Kingsley (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs – four earned – on six hits. Kingsley struck out five batters and walked three Bulldog hitters on the night.

First baseman Tyler Ervine led Tech at the plate on the night with a 2-for-4 performance and three runs scored to help lead the Bulldogs to the victory. Right fielder Bre'shon Kimbell added two runs batted in for Tech with two sacrifice flies and a 1-for-1 performance.
