Black History Moment: Catanese Grocery

NATCHITOCHES, LA (KSLA) -

Catanese Grocery was owned by an Italian immigrant family located around the African American community in Natchitoches.

Many locals visited the store to buy items or just to socialize.

The Italian grocery in the black community often reflected a pattern in southern towns, where immigrants opened their businesses to African Americans.

Both groups found themselves a subject of Jim Crow laws during segregation.
