"We don't need to do this to ourselves to know it's going to hurt. It's going to hurt, badly," said retired Brigadier General, Peyton Cole. He believes Barksdale Air Force Base, a base he describes as a mainstay of the Department of Defense, will feel that pain soon thanks to the automatic cuts that will be implemented should Congress fail to pass a budget.
Billions of dollars in cuts to the military is seen by many as dangerous and irresponsible, especially considering the level of violence throughout the world today.
"We're going to have to cut back on flying hours, and that means training. And training is going to be impacted very severely," says General Cole.
The cuts were meant to be so severe that no legislator would want them, but here we are, just a few days away from seeing them come to pass.
"I'm not at all happy about this I don't think it's necessary at all, and we can fix it," said US Congressman John Fleming from Louisiana's 4th District. He voted against sequestration. But he does believe a budget will be passed.
President Obama has urged legislators to work together and come to an agreement to avoid the cuts.
While some legislators remain optimistic that an agreement will be reached, General Cole says military leaders are already preparing for the worst.
"Our chief of staff has already said that he expects our air force to be non-mission capable by July. That means we won't be able to carry out air force missions in July," said General Cole.
BAFB emailed a statement to KSLA News 12 regarding civilian employees at the base:
"Barksdale employs approximately 1,362 civilians who could potentially be impacted by furloughs if sequestration occurs. The impact of the absence of our civilians will be felt across the base. Civilians will be given a 30-day notice in advance of any furlough actions should sequestration take effect."
